A comedy circuit hero since he first hit the UK in the 1980s as part of wayward musical troupe Corky and the Juice Pigs, Phil Nichol became the darling of the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, winning just about every accolade going. But Phil hasn’t followed that well-trod path and beaten a hasty retreat from live comedy for the sanctuary of easy TV punditry. Rather, the following Fringe saw him right back at the scene of his triumph-The Stand Comedy Club- doing what he does best- spinning comedy magic from excruciating personal situations.

Legendary for his raw, uncensored shows that are, frankly, autobiographical to the point of deranged, you might legitimately wonder what there is left for Phil to confess. Making out with his girlfriend’s dad? Debauched, substance-fuelled lost weekends with random bigots? Jazz ballet? Done, done and done. Now, Phil tackles what happens when you reach out to a stranger (in his case a Japanese Rolling Stones-obsessed heckler) and they then don’t leave your house. For months.

Away from leaving audiences in hysterics for the best part of two decades, Phil’s ‘straight’ acting career has proved equally fruitful. In 2005 The Stage named him Best Actor for his performance in Edward Albee’s Zoo Story and he has performed alongside Christian Slater in the acclaimed production of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Stewart Lee directed him as the lead in his 2006 production of Talk Radio and Phil also took to the West End Stage in Boy George’s hit musical Taboo.

Phil is also fast becoming a familiar TV face, with scene-stealing turns as the camper-than-thou entertainment host in BBC's hit comedy Broken News and as Rob Brydon's agent in Annually Retentive.

Away from the safety of the TV screen and in the live arena, Phil’s comedy is sweaty, raucous and all-embracing. Mr Nichol will touch you, quite possibly literally. There’s no fourth wall with Phil’s unique stand-up, no dry stand-offish one-liners- he just wants to share the love.
