Omid Djalili: Live!

The man who did the unthinkable and actually made prime time Saturday
night TV worth staying in for comes to Glasgow for one night only!
The multi award-winning Anglo-Iranian star of BBC1’s The Omid
Djalili Show
scored one of the biggest TV comedy hits of the year, as he unleashed
an idiosyncratic mix of political and social commentary, with the odd
belly dance thrown in for good measure.
No stranger to screen time, Omid has notched up an impressive number
of appearances in blockbusters such as The Mummy, Gladiator,
Spy Game and Pirates of the Caribbean III. Playing
everything from a camel herder to a terrorist, Omid refers to himself as
the ‘perfect ethnic everyman bit-part specialist’.
But, as comedy fans know, the talents of the man who holds the record
for the highest number of tickets sold at the Edinburgh Fringe (16,500+
for his No Agenda run, since you ask) and had people clamouring
for tickets during his sell-out two nights at the London Palladium
extend much further than that. Omid made a special appearance on Jack
Dee’s BBC1 showcase Live At The Apollo and has created a
great buzz across the pond, becoming only the second British comedian
ever to record his own HBO Special in the US and co-starring with
Whoopi Goldberg in her NBC sitcom Whoopi.
Omid Djalili achieves the seemingly impossible
balancing act of maintaining a broad, crowd-pleasing appeal whilst
pricking stereotypes, subverting prejudice and asking big questions.
Taking a grown-up swipe at modern life in multi-cultural Britain,
Omid’s stand-up is energetic, life-affirming and, as The Guardian
points out, ‘If we dropped Omid Djalilis all over the west instead of
bombs across the middle east, the world would be a far happier place.’
