The Festival: Friends and Sponsors:
|
The World Comes To GlasgowThis March, Glasgow will be playing host to a veritable United Nations of laughter, as the global comedy community descends on the city. For the first time, the festival will be hosting a series of showcase events, bringing the stand-ups creating the biggest buzz across the world to your doorstep, for two eagerly anticipated gala nights at The Stand Comedy Club. The World Stands Up sees Fred MacAulay representing the home crowd alongside New Yorker Marina Franklin, Germany’s comedy ambassador Henning Wehn and Rocky Mountains’ oddball Wilson Dixon, whilst festival sponsors Continental Airlines present America Stands Up, as San Francisco’s Sabrina Matthews introduces New Yorker Jeff Kreistler, Bostonian Dan Boulger and headline Seattleite Dave Fulton. Cult Big Apple legend Rick Shapiro will also be flying in to present a gleeful night of unruly anarchy. Dubbed the Iggy Pop of stand-up, Shapiro is wildly unpredictable and the antidote to slick one-liner merchants. In sharp contrast, the eminently slick Lea DeLaria, who made history by being the first openly gay comedian to appear on US TV, will be combining outrageous humour with hard-core swinging jazz during her one-night engagement at The Tron. Also from across the pond are Festival favourites, the ever-laconic Rich Hall, (who’ll be joined by redneck alter ego Otis Lee Crenshaw for an exclusive two-hander) and the masterful Reginald D Hunter, plus Dwight Slade, a comedy legend with over 20 years experience, a fact belied by his spookily youthful appearance. The Southern hemisphere is well represented by the 2007 If.Comedy winner Brendon Burns, pressing buttons with So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now? plus fellow Australian controversy-magnet Jim Jeffries, whilst heroically likeable Kiwi Jarred Christmas returns with another fun-filled giggle fest. Our favourite Canadians are also in town, with the manic Phil Nichol, racounteur Glenn Wool, edgy award winner Jason John Whitehead and stereotype shattering Stewart Francis promising to keep moose jokes to a minimum. Rounding it all off and ensuring that Irish (and Scottish and just about everybody else’s) eyes keep smiling we have a bumper selection of the Emerald Isles favourite talents- human Duracell Bunny Jason Byrne, Have I Got News For You favourite Dara O’Briain, laidback wit Ed Byrne, one of Ireland’s best-kept comedy secrets Colin Murray and the wildly prolific Andrew Maxwell will be both flying solo and hosting late night legend Fullmooners.
