Fast becoming a much-loved festival institution, the moving tribute
to The Essential Chic Murray returns to Gilmorehill for one night
only.
Written and presented by his daughter, Annabelle Meredith,
The Essential Chic Murray is a rare insight into the life and work
of the great man. Harkening back to the golden age of variety, the show
is laced with personal reminiscences, live music associated with Chic,
memorabilia and audio and video clips of Chic himself.
Born in Greenock, Chic Murray started his working life as an
engineer before realizing performing was his true vocation. First
stepping onto the stage with amateur groups such as ‘The Whinhillbillies’
and ‘Chic and his Chics’, he married fellow entertainer Maidie
Dickson in 1945 and they went on to form a successful double act.
Dubbed ‘The Tall Droll and The Small Doll’, Chic and Maidie combined
comedy, dancing and singing on the variety circuit before Chic went
solo.
During his long solo career Chic worked with all the big names of the
comedy world including Tommy Cooper and Eric Sykes and
made a number of film appearances including Casino Royale (1967),
Gregory’s Girl (1980) and You’ll Never Walk Alone (1984)
in which he played Liverpool football manager Bill Shankly.
With his forbidding expression and omnipresent ‘bunnet’, Chic
Murray’s off-beat comic vision of the world was absurd, surreal and
absolutely unique. As his daughter Annabelle said, ‘To understand my
father’s sense of humour you had to crack the code. If you didn’t manage
to crack the code you were left bewildered.’ Lines such as ‘My
girlfriend’s a redhead. No hair, just a red head.’and ‘This chap said to
me ‘If you look over there you’ll see Dunbar Rock.’ Well I looked for 20
minutes and the thing never moved an inch!’ are ageless and mark Chic
out as an abiding influence on the generations of comedians that
followed.
An ideal night out for those who warmly remember Chic or those who
want to rediscover one of the most enduring comedians of the 20th
century, The Essential Chic Murray is a warmly personal
celebration of and privileged insight into a genuine Scottish icon.
